The History of Cloud Rap
A chronological history of cloud rap from its origins around 2009 through Lil B, SpaceGhostPurrp and A$AP Rocky's breakthrough to the SoundCloud era and its lasting influence.
The history of cloud rap spans roughly from 2009 to the present, with its most culturally generative period falling between 2011 and 2014. It emerged from an intersection of internet culture, regional hip hop communities and a broader mood of disillusionment in post-recession American youth culture.
Early Origins (2009–2011)
The earliest roots of what became this style lie in the work of Lil B, a Berkeley-based rapper and member of The Pack who began releasing vast quantities of music on MySpace and later Tumblr and SoundCloud from around 2009. His deliberately lo-fi, unpolished releases and philosophical, often incoherent lyrics established a template of detached, internet-native rap that rejected conventional production polish. Simultaneously, SpaceGhostPurrp in Florida began developing a darker, more atmospheric production style through the Raider Klan collective.
Cloud Rap Goes Mainstream (2011–2012)
Cloud rap became more widely known when A$AP Rocky's debut mixtape Live.Love.A$AP arrived in 2011. The tape, produced largely by SpaceGhostPurrp and Clams Casino, brought the hazy, atmospheric production to a much larger audience. Clams Casino's instrumental mixtapes, also released in 2011, codified the genre's production sound for many listeners and producers. The genre spread rapidly through blogs, SoundCloud and Tumblr during this period.
Expansion and Diversification (2012–2015)
By 2012 the sound had spread internationally. Swedish artist Yung Lean and his Sad Boys collective emerged from Stockholm in 2013, adding a European, aesthetic-forward dimension to the cloud rap tradition. Bones, an American artist who releases at high volume across multiple aliases, developed a harder-edged variant that incorporated metal and punk influences. The genre fragmented into adjacent styles including witch house, emo rap and goth rap, each building on its atmospheric, introspective foundation.
Legacy and the SoundCloud Era (2015–Present)
Cloud rap's influence on the SoundCloud rap wave of 2016 to 2019 is significant. The emphasis on online self-release, lo-fi aesthetics and emotional vulnerability that characterised the the genre movement seeded the conditions for artists like Lil Peep, XXXTentacion and Juice WRLD. The production aesthetic it established — reverb-heavy, atmospheric, slow — remains a reference point for hip hop producers internationally.
