From a Hawaiian beach to Nashville session rooms — the full story of the lap steel guitar, how it's played, and how it differs from its steel-guitar cousins.
Overview
Resonator guitar models are known for their distinctive metal cones, which project sound with a sharp, punchy attack. A resonator guitar suits blues, roots, folk and slide playing, especially where extra volume and a characterful tone are needed.
Sound and style
Players often choose a resonator guitar for its bright edge and strong midrange presence. Whether fitted with a round-neck or square-neck setup, the resonator guitar delivers a voice that stands apart from standard acoustic designs and records extremely well.
Choosing the right model
For UK musicians, the right resonator guitar depends on style and playing position. Metal-bodied and wooden-bodied versions each offer a different response, while biscuit-bridge and spider-bridge designs shape the feel and tonal balance in very different ways.
Performance use
A resonator guitar is ideal for traditional blues, Americana and acoustic ensembles needing projection without amplification. It remains a specialist instrument, but one with a long history and a highly recognisable sound.
