English Horn Cor Anglais

English horn and cor anglais explained

The english horn cor anglais category covers the same orchestral instrument under two commonly used names. In UK musical circles, the French term cor anglais is standard, while English horn is often used internationally.

A distinctive double-reed sound

An english horn cor anglais instrument produces a darker, more plaintive tone than the oboe, with a rounded lower register and a singing upper range. Its voice is ideal for lyrical solos, atmospheric passages and subtle harmonic support in orchestral scores.

For orchestral and chamber players

Musicians choosing an english horn cor anglais should look for reliable tuning, comfortable keywork and a responsive reed setup. The best instruments make it easier to manage breath, phrasing and projection, whether in rehearsals, concerts or studio work.
