Common Beyerdynamic Mistakes to Avoid
Beyerdynamic headphones don't fail—but people do fail to use them properly. Here are the most common mistakes, all completely avoidable once you know about them.
Mistake 1: Buying 250-Ohm Without an Amplifier
The most common beginner error. You buy a beautiful Beyerdynamic 250-ohm model, plug it into your audio interface, and it sounds quiet and strained. You think the headphones are broken.
They're not. Higher impedance headphones require a proper headphone amplifier that can deliver stable current. Without it, your interface struggles to drive them properly.
The fix: start with 16 or 80-ohm models. Add a proper amplifier (SPL Phonitor Mini, Audient Sono) if you want to upgrade later.
Mistake 2: Expecting Them to Sound Exciting Immediately
Beyerdynamic headphones are accurate, not exciting. If you're used to bass-boosted consumer headphones, they sound boring at first. Many beginners return them thinking they're defective.
The reality: your ears are adjusting. Consumer headphones have trained you to expect exaggerated bass and treble. Beyerdynamic reveals what's actually in your mix. Give it two weeks and you'll prefer the honesty.
Mistake 3: Poor Cable Management
The cables on Beyerdynamic headphones are robust, but they're still cables. Repeatedly coiling them tightly, stepping on them, or yanking them out of the audio interface will eventually damage them.
The fix: wind cables loosely and use cable clips. If a cable eventually fails (unlikely, but possible), Beyerdynamic sells replacement cables for £30–50. Treat your gear decently and it lasts forever.
Mistake 4: Wrong Model for Your Application
Buying open-back headphones for vocal recording (your microphone will pick up sound leaking from the headphones). Or buying closed-back when you're mixing and need accurate soundstage representation. Or buying a 250-ohm mixing headphone when you're primarily mixing in a bedroom.
The fix: think about your primary use case first. Recording vocals? Closed-back. Mixing in a studio? Open-back (or closed-back if isolation matters more). Mobile reference monitoring? Portable models. Start with the right tool for your job.
Mistake 5: Skipping the Headphone Amplifier When You Need One
Different issue from Mistake 1. You buy an 80-ohm model, and it works fine plugged into your interface. But you miss out on the improved clarity and control a quality amplifier would provide.
This isn't a mistake, exactly—80-ohm models work without amplification. But if you're serious about mixing, a headphone amplifier (£150–400) genuinely improves the experience.
Mistake 6: Not Knowing About Replacement Parts
Beyerdynamic stocks replacement ear pads (£30–50), headbands, cables and other parts. A pair of worn ear pads doesn't mean buying new headphones. Most Beyerdynamic units are repairable for years.
The fix: if ear pads wear (after years of daily use), order replacements from Beyerdynamic directly. Your £150 headphones stay functional for another decade.
Mistake 7: Using Damaged Cables
A frayed, kinked or partially broken cable will gradually damage your headphone input. Don't "make do" with a marginal cable. Either replace it or stop using the headphones until you can.
Beyerdynamic replacement cables are affordable. Repair damage to your audio interface is not.
Mistake 8: Not Cleaning Them
Beyerdynamic headphones accumulate dust and earwax over months of use. Occasional cleaning (dry cloth, maybe a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on the drivers) keeps them sounding fresh. Neglected headphones gradually sound dull.
The fix: clean your headphones every three months. Takes five minutes and keeps them sounding as designed.
Mistake 9: Comparing Them to Overpriced Consumer Headphones
Some consumer headphones cost three times as much as Beyerdynamic but sound worse for professional mixing. The hype and branding inflate their prices. Beyerdynamic's pricing is genuinely fair for the engineering you're getting.
Don't second-guess your choice because some boutique brand costs more. Professional studios use Beyerdynamic because the engineering is proven.
Mistake 10: Storing Them Poorly
Headphones left in hot cars, damp basements or tangled in cable messes will degrade. Store them in a dry, organised space. If you're transporting them frequently, invest in a padded case (£20–40). Extended cable life and better protection against damage.
Mistake 11: Not Reading the Manual
Each Beyerdynamic model comes with specific information about care, impedance selection and optimal use. Five minutes reading the manual prevents most of these mistakes entirely.
The Meta-Mistake: Overthinking
Beyerdynamic headphones work brilliantly right out of the box. Don't overthink impedance, amplifiers, or which specific model. Pick one designed for your primary use case, use it regularly for two weeks, and let it do its job.
Professionals have been mixing on Beyerdynamic for decades. You'll figure it out in about the same time they did.
