Mumble Rap Subgenres, Explained
The broad category of mumble rap contains several distinct subgenres and stylistic approaches, distinguished by their regional origins, production aesthetics and the degree to which vocal processing dominates the mix. Understanding these distinctions is useful when approaching the catalogue systematically. Each strand of mumble rap has its own set of key artists, albums and producers.
Atlanta Trap Rap
The foundational strand of mumble rap comes from Atlanta's trap scene, developed by producers including Zaytoven, Southside and Metro Boomin during the late 2000s and early 2010s. The Atlanta trap approach uses 808 kick drums, rapid hi-hat patterns and dark synthesiser pads as the production basis, with vocals — typically processed through AutoTune — delivered in a low, slurred register that prioritises emotional texture over enunciation. Future, Young Thug and Migos are the most significant artists in this strand, though their individual approaches differ considerably.
SoundCloud Rap
A separate but overlapping mumble rap strand emerged primarily through SoundCloud distribution in the mid-2010s. SoundCloud rap drew on emo, post-hardcore and grunge references in addition to trap production, creating an aesthetic that was visually and thematically distinct from Atlanta trap. Artists including Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Lil Peep and XXXTentacion uploaded music to SoundCloud before signing major-label deals, building audiences through online sharing rather than traditional radio promotion. The emotional content — grief, romantic obsession, self-destruction — was treated with melodic detachment rather than confessional directness.
Plugg and Rage Rap
Plugg is a production subgenre associated with Ethereal and similar producers, characterised by bright, reverb-heavy synthesiser patches, high-pitched drum patterns and sparse arrangements. The vocal delivery over plugg production tends to be more melodic and less aggressive than over traditional trap beats. Rage rap, associated with artists including Playboi Carti's later work and producers such as F1lthy, pushes the production into a harder, more distorted direction while retaining the abstract vocal approach.
Memphis-Influenced Rap
A strand of the broader scene draws directly from Memphis underground rap of the 1990s — artists including Three 6 Mafia and DJ Screw — and combines this influence with contemporary trap production. The Memphis influence shows in slower tempos, horror-sample aesthetics and a more deliberate approach to minimalism in lyrical content.
