The Complete Guide to 5 String Fretless
A 5 string fretless bass combines extended low-end range with expressive toneless playing, offering unmatched melodic possibilities in jazz, funk, and progressive music.
Smooth, expressive playing
A 5 string fretless bass replaces frets with a smooth fingerboard, allowing the player to slide between notes and shape pitch with a very vocal quality. Adding the low B string gives even more range, making a 5 string fretless bass a strong choice for melodic bass work, jazz, fusion, ambient music and creative session playing. It suits UK musicians who want character as well as depth.
Sound and technique
The absence of frets changes both the feel and the sound. Notes can be approached with subtle vibrato, microtonal movement and clean glissando, which makes a 5 string fretless bass especially expressive in the right hands. Precise left-hand control is important, but the reward is a rounded, singing tone that stands apart from fretted instruments.
Where it fits best
In ensemble settings, a 5 string fretless bass can provide a distinctive voice without losing the ability to support the low end. It works well when the part needs warmth, nuance and melodic detail. For players who want extended range and a more fluid response, the 5 string fretless bass offers a distinctive and rewarding playing experience.
