5 String Fretless Bass

Expressive low-end voice

A 5 string fretless bass combines extended range with the smooth, unfretted feel that many players love for lyrical and expressive lines. The extra low B string gives access to deeper notes, while the fretless fingerboard allows slides, vibrato and subtle intonation shaping. A 5 string fretless bass is a strong option for UK musicians working in jazz, fusion, film sessions and atmospheric band settings.

Feel and control

Playing a fretless instrument demands accuracy, but it also rewards a lighter and more vocal approach. On a 5 string fretless bass, the player can move between notes with a fluid motion that feels very different from a standard fretted bass. Many bassists appreciate the rounded attack and singing sustain, especially when the part needs warmth and detail.

Musical applications

This type of bass is particularly effective when the arrangement benefits from colour rather than sheer punch. It can still anchor a groove, but it also adds a distinctive melodic presence. For players who want the range of a five-string instrument and the expressive character of fretless playing, a 5 string fretless bass is an inspired choice.
