The Complete Guide to 12 String Acoustic Strings
Discover everything you need to know about selecting, maintaining, and optimising 12 string acoustic bass strings for your playing style and instrument.
Bright, ringing string sets for 12-string acoustics
12 string acoustic strings are designed to suit the extra courses found on a twelve-string guitar, helping to deliver the rich, shimmering tone these instruments are known for. They are a key part of the category because correct gauge, tension and string pairing all affect tuning stability, playability and overall sound.
Choose the right gauge and feel
Compared with standard six-string sets, 12 string acoustic strings need careful selection to balance brightness, volume and comfort. Lighter gauges can make fretting easier, while slightly heavier sets may provide more body and stronger projection. The right set depends on the guitar, the player’s style and whether the instrument is used for strumming, studio work or live performance.
Reliable performance for regular use
For UK players, 12 string acoustic strings are often chosen for folk, rock and pop arrangements where a full, layered sound is needed. Fresh strings help preserve the characteristic chime of the instrument and support better intonation, making them an important regular purchase for working musicians and recording players alike.
