Reason for Beginners: A Complete Guide
Rack below, sequencer above — this guide walks through the essentials from first launch to recording a loop, covering instrument insertion, MIDI recording and cable routing.
Getting Started With Reason
Download Reason from the official website and install it on Windows or macOS. If you are using the subscription, log in to your account after installation to unlock the full instrument and effects library. Open the software for the first time and you will see two main areas: the sequencer at the top (where you record and arrange MIDI and audio) and the rack below (where your instruments and effects live).
Understanding the Reason Interface
The rack is the core of the software. Every sound source — synthesiser, drum machine, sampler — appears as a device in the rack, stacked vertically. Devices are connected to a main mixer automatically when inserted. The sequencer shows a horizontal timeline with one track per device. Click on a track to select it and record MIDI from a keyboard controller, or draw notes in with the pencil tool.
Building Your First Rack in Reason
Right-click in the rack to open the device browser and choose an instrument to insert. The Thor synthesiser and the Redrum drum machine are good starting points — Thor for melodic content, Redrum for beat programming. When you insert a device, a corresponding track appears in the sequencer automatically. Start with one or two devices rather than building a large rack immediately, and learn how each one responds before adding complexity.
Recording MIDI in Reason
Reason uses a pattern-based sequencer. Select a track, press the record button and play notes on your MIDI keyboard — or use the pencil tool in the piano roll to draw notes manually. Zoom into the piano roll using the scroll wheel to place notes at precise positions. Quantise your MIDI notes after recording using the Edit menu to correct timing without affecting pitch or velocity unless you choose to adjust those separately.
Next Steps
Once you have a basic loop running, explore the cable routing on the rear of the rack by pressing Tab — this is where Reason reveals its full signal-routing depth, opening up creative possibilities that distinguish this software from conventional linear DAWs. See our overview article for a full guide to every built-in instrument.
