How to Set Up and Use Serum Presets
Installing Serum presets requires placing .fxp files and any associated wavetables in the correct folders on your drive. Here is the full process from download to browsable preset library.
Installing Serum presets is straightforward once you know the correct folder structure and understand how custom wavetables are handled. The process is identical on Mac and Windows except for where the Serum data folder lives on your system. The steps below cover a standard installation from a downloaded preset pack to browsable presets in Serum's preset browser.
Before You Begin
You will need: Serum installed and activated, a downloaded preset pack (usually a .zip file containing .fxp files and optionally a Wavetables folder), and access to your user data folder. Serum stores its presets and wavetables in a specific location on your drive — on Mac this is typically ~/Music/Serum Presets, and on Windows it is usually Documents\Xfer\Serum Presets. The exact path may vary if you moved the Serum data folder during setup; Serum's own menu (Serum → Show Presets Folder) will confirm the correct location.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Download and unzip the preset pack. Most packs are delivered as .zip archives. Extract the contents to a temporary location on your drive so you can see the folder structure before moving anything.
- Locate your presets folder. In Serum, go to the Menu (the hamburger icon at the top right), select "Show Presets Folder", and your system file browser will open at the correct location.
- Copy the preset files into the Presets folder. Inside your Serum data folder, there is a Presets subfolder. Inside that, there are genre or category subfolders. Copy the .fxp files from the downloaded pack into an appropriate subfolder, or create a new subfolder named after the pack for organisation.
- Copy any custom wavetables into the Wavetables folder. If the pack includes a Wavetables folder, copy its contents into the Wavetables subfolder inside your Serum data folder. Keep any provided subfolder structure intact — some presets reference wavetables by folder path.
- Rescan the preset library in Serum. In Serum, click the preset browser's menu and select "Rescan Presets Folder" (or restart Serum). The new presets will now appear in the browser under the subfolder you placed them in.
- Test a few presets to confirm wavetables are loading. Open several of the new presets and check that sounds load without errors. If a wavetable is missing, Serum will typically show an error message or load a default waveform. Return to step 4 and verify the wavetable path if this occurs.
Organising Your Preset Library
As your library of presets grows, organisation becomes important. Creating named subfolders by pack, genre, or sound type within the Presets directory keeps the browser manageable. Serum's preset browser reflects the folder structure directly — whatever organisation you create on disk appears in the browser. Some producers maintain a separate "Favourites" or "Working" folder of presets they return to most often, which stays smaller and easier to navigate than the full library.
Backing Up Your Presets
The preset library folder is not backed up automatically unless you include it in your system backup. For producers with a large library of purchased and custom presets, adding the Serum data folder to a cloud sync service (Dropbox, Google Drive) or including it in a dedicated backup provides protection against data loss. If you reinstall Serum or move to a new machine, copying the entire Serum data folder preserves all installed presets and wavetables.
